Choosing a rental car for Las Vegas? Start with the trip you’re actually taking. City parking, a paved scenic drive and a winter mountain outing ask different things of a car — and the biggest option isn’t automatically the best fit.

Traveling light with a friend? Compare compact and midsize options, then check the listed luggage capacity and fuel information. A smaller car may be easier to live with in a garage, but actual prices and space vary by offer.

Bringing a group and full-size suitcases? Look closely at cargo room with everyone seated. An SUV badge alone won’t tell you whether all the bags fit. Compare a larger SUV or minivan if the smaller options look tight.

Heading to Mount Charleston in winter? Check Nevada’s current road restrictions and ask the rental company about the actual vehicle and permitted equipment. All-wheel drive isn’t a substitute for suitable tires or a pass to ignore closures.

Tempted by a convertible? We get it. Just think about the forecast, shade and luggage room as well as the photo opportunity. Pick the car you’ll enjoy using for the whole trip, not only the first ten minutes.
